Security at mosques, churches beefed up

Security has been intensified in the religious institutions like mosques, churches and temples, across the country.
The step has been taken in view of attacks on several institutions in Bogra, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Pabna, Rangpur, Jessore, Chuadanga and Chittagong recently, intelligence sources said. Of the measures, an officer of Special Branch (SB) of Police will keep constant watch on all the mosques across the country every day during prayers time.
This is part of police security,” said Nazrul Islam, Assistant Inspector General (Media) of Police on Monday.
A priest of a church in Lalmonirhat has been threatened to death. He received a letter on Saturday. Tapan Kumar Barman, 44, administrator of the church informed it.
Meanwhile, 10 people of the Christian community in Rangpur, including the Father of the Rangpur Baptist Church, received death threats in a letter a few days ago.
A bomb attack during a festival at the Kantajeu Temple in Dinajpur left nine people injured on December 5 and another attack on the Namhatta Iskcon temple at Kaharol upazila in the district on December 10.
Earlier, a muazzin was killed and three others, including the imam of a mosque, were injured after unidentified assailants stormed into a mosque at Haripur village in Shibganj upazila of Bogra.
One person was killed and about 87 others were injured in bomb explosions in front of Husseni Dalan on October 24.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told the reporter on Sunday that the security had already been ratcheted up in all religious institutes.
