Section 144 in Basurhat as AL factions fight

Local administration has imposed section 144 in Basurhat municipality of Companiganj upazila in Noakhali district as two factions of Awami League have announced to hold meeting at the same time and venue in the area.
The emergency section will be remain in force until 6 pm on Monday, said a notice signed by Mohamamd Ziaul Haque Mir, an executive magistrate and UNO of Companyganj upazila.
All kinds of meeting, rally and gatherings have been prohibited during this period, said the notice.
Additional police have been deployed in different parts of the municipality including Basurhat Bazar. On Saturday, former Upazila Chairman Mizanur Rahman called a meeting at Basurhat Bazar Rupali Chattar protesting ‘falsehood against some Awami League leaders’ on Monday noon.
Later, Abdul Quader Mirza, mayor of Basurhat municipality and younger brother of AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, called another meeting at the same venue and time.
For avoiding possible clash and untoward incident, the local administration imposed ban on public gatherings in the area.
Earlier, at least 50 persons sustained injured when a clash broke out between two rival groups of local Awami League at Chaprashirhat Bazar under Companyganj upazila in Noakhali district on Friday afternoon.
In order to bring the situation under control, police charged batons, fired blank shots and lobbed tear shells on the people locked in the clash.
Witnesses said the chase and counter-chase broke out at about 4:45pm in front of the Awami League office at Chaprashirhat Purbo Bazar. At one stage, both the rival groups locked in clash.
