Second Bhairab, Titas Rly bridges to be opened in Sept

Second Bhairab and Titas Railway bridges on Dhaka Chittagong
route over the Meghna and Titas rivers respectively are expected to be opened in September next to lessen travel time between Dhaka and Chittagong.
“The construction of Second Bhairab and Titas Railway bridges involving Taka 959.20 crore has already been completed. The two bridges will be inaugurated in September next,” General Manager of Bangladesh Railway (east) Abdul Hai told BSS.
Additional Director General (operation) of Bangladesh Railway Md Habibur Rahman said when the 984 meter long Second Bhairab Railway Bridge and 218 meter long Titas Railway Bridge will be opened, trains will run through Bhairab and Akhaura stations without crossing. It will also lessen travel time, he added.
Public Relations Officer of Railway Ministry Shariful Alam said trains have already started running on double line from Tongi to Bhairab Bazar stations on Dhaka-Chittagong route.
“After the introduction of double line, some 84 trains, including intercity trains, are
running every day in this part of train route,” he added.
He said when the two bridges will be completed; it will be possible to begin train service on double line from Dhaka to Akhaura.
Later, when double line from Dhaka to Chittagong will be completed, it will play an important role to lessen about 2 hours travel time between Dhaka and Chittagong. Now it takes around six hours to reach Chittagong from Dhaka.
In this regard, Akhaura-Laksam Double Track project director Mozammel Haque said 30 percent work of the project has already been completed. The project work is expected to end by June in 2020, he said.
