The local administration imposed Section 144 in Kamarkhara Union of Tongibari upazila in Munshiganj as two factions of Awami League called meetings at the same venue on Friday.
As per the restriction, all types of political gatherings will remain prohibited near the venue in Kamarkhara Union from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Friday, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Hasina Akhter. She said that, Amir Hossain, President of Kamarkhara Union unit Awami League, called a meeting around 9:00am in support of the Ward Committee which was announced recently while Anis Haldar, Vice-President of the unit, called separate meeting at the same place opposing the new committee.
“The two factions subsequently announced programmes at the same venue on Friday. As a result, Section 144 has been imposed and all political activities have been suspended, the UNO said.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation. Security at the venue has also been ramped up to maintain order, said Hasina.
