The government is going to establish a public university in the country’s haor area with a view to educating its people and developing the area, the Education Ministry sources said.
The Ministry officials said the University of Dhaka, the country’s oldest public university, was established in 1921 with an aim to educate the people of the then East Bengal.
Likewise, the government plans to set up a specialised university for overall development of the haor people.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) enacted a draft law for this purpose and sent the proposal to the Education Ministry for taking further course of action.
The name of the proposed university will be Sunamganj University of Science and Technology; changeable if the Ministry thinks, the UGC sources said.
Deputy Secretary (Secondary and Higher Education Division) of the ministry Zinnat Rehana said that the UGC submitted a draft law named “Sunamganj University of Science and Technology Ordinance” to the ministry.
“It will be placed at the Inter-Ministerial Meeting for discussion and then to the Law Ministry for evaluation. Finally the work
to establish the university will begin after the bill is passed in the Parliament,” said Zinnat Rehana. State Minister for Finance Ministry M A Mannan requested the Prime Minister for a public university in his home district (Sunamganj) in the ECNEC meeting on October 4 in 2016.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid supported the proposal and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also gave green signal.
Later, State Minister M A Mannan sent a demi-official (DO) letter to the Education Minister for taking initiative.
In his DO letter, he said, “The incumbent government has achieved tremendous success in the education sector. The Education Ministry has been working relentlessly to establish both public and private universities, colleges, schools and madrasas. Sunamganj district is one of the under-developed districts in the country. There is no public university that the students can get higher education. In this situation, the government should establish a public university to develop the quality education in the area.”
It may be mentioned that there are 40 public universities and 97 private universities in the country.
