Schools, colleges shut till 11 Sept

The Bangladesh government has extended the shutdown of schools and colleges to Sept 11 in the pandemic.
The education ministry issued a notice, announcing the time extension on Thursday.
All educational institutions throughout the country have been closed since March 2020 due to the pandemic.
The government has made several attempts to reopen schools, but have been thwarted in their efforts by fresh waves of infections. As such students have not been able to returned to classrooms in a year and a half.
Though there has been pressure from many quarters to reopen educational institutions, the government has said it is waiting for teachers and students to get vaccinated and for the pandemic to reach a ‘tolerable level’.
The shutdown of schools and colleges was to end on Aug 31, before the Ministry of Education announced the extension on Thursday.
Besides, it has been decided to open the public universities step by step from October 15.
Education Minister Dipu Moni informed the decision after a meeting of the technical committee including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education to monitor the COVID situation and reopen the educational institutions on Thursday afternoon.
About opening the public universities, the Education Minister said vaccination information would be sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the form of a table from all the universities.
“It was decided that only those universities which would be under 100 percent vaccination campaign would be able to start all the activities including the residence halls of those universities,” Dr. Dipu Moni informed. At the end of the meeting with the vice-chancellors, UGC chairman Kazi Shahidullah wanted to know the decision to open the university from the Education Minister.
