ACC probes initiated: School lands made hats, shops, slums

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an inquiry into allegation that some influential quarters have occupied the land belonging to 15 government primary schools in the city.
Cattle hats, buildings, shops and slums have reportedly been set up there.
The ACC has taken the complaint into cognizance and formed a team headed by Deputy Director Anwarul Haque for investigation.
A team member told The New Nation that they already visited several schools and found evidence of land grabbing.
Besides, the ACC has information that the school managing committee and the headmasters rent the school premises for cultural functions and wedding ceremony.
According to the complaint received by the ACC, Khoda Box Primary School at Kaptan Bazar is no more a school now. It has become a cattle market.
An influential quarter has built a five-storey building on five decimals of land belonging to M A Alim Government Primary School established in 1952 at Wari. A case has been filed in this connection.
Few locally powerful persons have grabbed about 31 decimals of land out of 39 of Bhrammanchiron Government Primary School at Demra. They have set up tin-shed houses there.
Shahin Government Primary School was established on 36 decimals of land in Mohammadpur Town Hall area in 1968. Some stranded Pakistanis and a group of locally influential persons have built houses on about 31 decimals of land.
About 10 decimals land out of 18 decimals of Kamrangirchar Government Primary School established in 1973, has been occupied by some locally powerful persons. A case was filed in this connection in 2003.
Gandaria Mohila Samity Government Primary School was established on 37.76 decimals of land in 1950. But the school now owners 12 decimals only.
About 33 decimals of land out of 196 of Sher-e-Bangla Government Primary School has been occupied. Slum houses have been set up on the school land.
Kazi Fari Government Primary School was established on 1.85 acres of land at Mirpur. The school has a few decimals of land now. The vast majority portion of the land is under the illegal occupation of the grabbers.
About four kathas of land of Samajik Sikkhakendra Government Primary School established on Bailey Road in 1962 has been grabbed.
The major portion of Bangla Bazaar Government Primary School is now under the illegal control of others.
Nazira Bazaar Government Primary Girls School was started in 1941. About 10 decimals of land of the school has been grabbed. Three-storey out of four of F K M Government Primary School has been grabbed.
Suritola Government Primary School in old Dhaka was set up in 1927. A private school has taken the control of one of its buildings illegally.
Kazkira Degree College occupied the land belonging to Kazkira Government Primary School established at Gulshan in 1936. Bricks, sand, road and other materials are regularly stored in the ground of Hazi Yusuf Ali Government Primary School at Mirpur.
