School girl becomes pregnant in Tangail

A 13-year old school girl has become seven months pregnant by a 65-year old freedom fighter of Bangra village in Basail upazila of Tangail district.
The victim’s mother, Shefali Begum, filed a case with the Basail Police Station in this connection on Tuesday, said Nurul Islam Khan, Officer-in-Charge of the police station.
We are hunting the accused Sona Mia Munshi after filing of the case, the police official said.
But local people alleged that they did not observe any effective step to arrest the accused of the case.
According to case document, the victim was a student of class seven of Abeda Khanom Girls’ High School and College. She used to visit almost regularly Sona Mia’s house based on their good ties with the family.
On the fateful day in March this year, Sona Mia raped her when she went to his house for a discussion about a job and to take Tk 1000 as loan. Sona Mia threatened her to kill if she disclosed the rape incident.
After observing her abnormal physical change, the family members suspected the girl as pregnant and took her to a local clinic for ultrasonic grapy test. The test report mentioned that the girl has become seven months pregnant.
Following the doctors’ report, the girl described the heinous incident to family members and burst into tear. When they informed Sona Mia, he confessed the incident and agree to pay Tk 1 lakh to dismiss the incident through local arbitrations last week. Even he tried to convince the victim for abortion by the local ruling party leaders and other musclemen, according to victim’s family.
Shefali Begum said, ” We are passing miserable days as her husband left her after the second marriage while she conceive her daughter. Sona Mia helped her various times and visited their family almost regularly. At last, he wanted to give a job to her daughter. But he raped her daughter when her daughter went to his house for taking loan about seven months ago.”
 “I want exemplarily punishment of Sona Mia for destroying the life of my daughter and tarnishing the image in the society,” she said.
Basail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamsunnaher Shapna told The New Nation on Tuesday, “I visited the victim’s house and ensured them all types of help from the administration.”
She claimed that the police have been asked to take all necessary legal steps in this regard.
In a query, Shapna said, we are giving the highest priority in the incident.
The case’s Investigation officer and Sub-Inspector, Nasim, said that they interrogated the girl and also took her to the hospital for sample collection.
We will sure about rape and pregnancy after receiving the medical report, the IO said.
We have already conducted several drives and step will be continued to arrest the accused, the SI said.
