Sylhet City Corporation in a drive demolished more than 50 illegal structures erected on government land in the city’s Dakkhin Surma area on Monday.
The city corporation authorities led by mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury conducted the drive at noon and bulldozed the structures, including shops, shanties and mechanical workshops, built up grabbing government lands at different places between Humayun Rashid Square and Bandar Ghat of Shibbari area under Dakkhin Surma Police Station.
Talking to the reporters, Sylhet mayor Arif said that the corporation served notices several times to the land grabbers to remove their illegal structures from the government land but they did not pay heed in the notices.
‘As a result, we were compelled to conduct the raid today to demolish the illegal structures,’ mayor Arif said.
No land grabber would be spared from the action, he said, adding that the raid would be continued against the land grabbers across the city.
Officials and employees of SCC and Sylhet Metropolitan Police, including corporation councillor Azam Khan and Taufik Baksh Lipon, its chief engineer Nur Azizur Rahman and SMP additional commissioner (traffic) Nikolin Chakma, were present during the drive.
