Protesting what it said the Chief Justice’s unguarded comments about Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman Abdul Baset Majumder, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has urged him to withdraw the remarks.
The demand was made at a meeting of the council held at the SCBA Bhaban on Monday.
However, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, who was present at the meeting, said the Chief Justice made the remarks about a section of lawyers of Laxmipur.
Following a writ petition filed with the High Court seeking its directives to remove a building constructed on the land of Laxmipur court by a section of lawyers, the Appellate Division on August 18 ordered demolition of it by seven days. During the hearing, the Chief Justice made some remarks.
SCBA president Yusuf Hossain Humayun said he thinks the Chief Justice’ s remarks about lawyers are improper which does not suit him. “We’ve our own dignity.”
At one stage, the attorney general appeared at the meeting when he said the Chief Justice made the remarks about a section of Laxmipur Bar Association who constructed the building on court land. “Don’t take it as a whole.”
Later, the meeting was adjourned until Sunday next urging the Chief Justice to withdraw his remarks by the time.
Our Correspondent adds: Some senior lawyers gave their view to say that the Chief Justice did not make the remark about a section of the lawyers in public and in this context, it would have been best if the issue was resolved within the bounds of court premises. The respect for the Judiciary should have been the utmost consideration. The senior lawyers refused to give their names saying that they do not want to appear against the sentiment of the lawyers.
