Voting in two-day polls to elect the office-bearers for 2019-2020 session of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) will start today (Wednesday).
Voting will begin at 10.00 am and will continue till 5.00 pm with one hour recess in the middle of the election days.
“A total of 33 candidates are taking part in the election for 14 posts,” Supreme Court Bar Superintendant Nimesh Chandra Das told the reporters.
The polls are held each year to elect seven office-bearer posts and seven executive members posts.
Nimesh Das further said, A Y Moshiujjaman will conduct the two-day polls as Chief Election Commissioner.
The two main rivals are pro-BNP ‘Blue Panel’ and pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’.
Advocate A J Mohammad Ali and Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan are contesting for the posts of President and General Secretary respectively from the ‘Blue Panel’.
From this panel, Advocate Md Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan and Advocate Abdul Baten are candidates for the two posts of Vice-President, Advocate Imam Hossain Sidney for the post of Treasurer, Advocate Mohamamd Mujibur Rahman and Advocate Sharif Uddin Ahmed are candidates for the two posts of Assistant Secretary.
Advocate Rashida Alim Oeeshi, Advocate Osman Chowdhury, Advocate Kazi Akhter Hossain, Advocate Md Shafiur Rahman, Advocate Md Sharif Uddin Ratan, Advocate Mohaddesul Islam and Advocate Shahin Ara Laily are candidates for the seven posts of Executive Members from this panel.
Meanwhile, Advocate A M Amin Uddin and Abdun Nur Dulal are vying for the posts of President and General Secretary from pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’.
Advocate Bibhas Chandra and Advocate Jasim Uddin will contest for the two posts of Vice-Presidents, Advocate Syed Alam Tipu for the post of Treasurer, Advocate Bakir Uddin Bhuiyan and Advocate Kazi Shamsul Hasan will contest for the two posts of Assistant Secretary from the panel.
Advocate Jaglul Kabir, Advocate Mashiur Rahman, Advocate Shamim Sarder, Advocate Afia Afrose Rani, Advocate Awlad Hossain, Advocate Humayun Kabir and Advocate Chanchal Kumar Biswas will contest for the seven posts of Executive Members from this panel.
Pro-BNP lawyers won 10 out of 14 posts, including President and Secretary, in the Supreme Court Bar Association election last year. Pro-Awami League lawyers secured the rest of the four posts, including an Assistant Secretary.
