SCBA polls end

The voting in the two-day election of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) ended on Thursday afternoon. The voting was held from 10am to 5pm on Wednesday and Thursday with a one-hour break from 1pm every day.
Some 3,143 lawyers, out of total 4,055, of the country’s apex court exercised their franchise in the polls conducted by a seven-member panel, headed by senior lawyer M Nur Hossain Chowdhury.
A total of 35 candidates, including 14 each from Awami League-backed and BNP-blessed panels, contested the election for 14 posts of the association.
Former Law Minister Abdul Matin Khasru and
Advocate Rabiul Islam Budu from the Awami League panel vied for the posts of president and general secretary respectively against Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain and current SCBA general secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon from the BNP-backed panel.
While talking to reporters, Nur Hossain said the vote counting is scheduled to begin at 8pm. “We hope that it will be possible to announce the result by 12am.”
