Staff Reporter :
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Advocate Zainul Abedin on Wednesday demanded the Election Commission to cancel the result of 11th parliamentary election and hold fresh election under a non-partisan and neutral government.
The SCBA President urged the Supreme Court to issue a Suo Moto order on the EC to cancel the election result saying ballots were stuffed in 90 percent areas of the country the day before the election.
He made the appeal at a press conference at the SCBA auditorium. Bar Secretary Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan and other leaders were present on the occasion.
Zainul said, the election cannot be termed “election” in any manner as no voters and polling agents of the candidates other than the AL ones were allowed to enter the polling centres.
He said, he had expected that the polling atmosphere would be fair since the Army and BGB had been deployed at the polling stations, but alleged that they could not work independently. They could not work without the permission of the Deputy Commissioners and Upazila Nirbahi Officers, he said.
Zainul also demanded resignation of the SC judges who disqualified the candidates of the election. “I think they (the judges) have violated their oath,” the SCBA President said.
In the December 30 parliamentary election, the AL-led Grand Alliance won 288 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad against the BNP-led Oikyafront’s seven.
Three independent candidates also became victorious.
The election in Brahmanbaria-2 was suspended as voting at three polling centres was suspended over violence. Polling in those centres will be held on January 9.
Polls in Gaibandha-3 were rescheduled for January 27 following the death of a candidate.
