The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld its previous verdict that had sentenced war crimes accused Delwar Hossain Sayedee to life-term imprisonment until death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
The five-member bench led by Chief Justice SK Sinha dismissed two separate petitions of Sayedee and the prosecution seeking review of its earlier order.
Sayedee has to suffer imprisonment until his death from now. On February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) sentenced Sayedee to death for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
On March 28, 2013, Sayedee filed an appeal with the Appellate Division seeking acquittal from the charges, while on behalf of the state on the same day another appeal was made to the Court seeking capital punishment in all the eight charges Sayedee had been facing.
The Appellate Division on December 31, 2015 released the full text of its verdict commuting Sayedee’s death penalty to jail until death in the case. It pronounced its verdict on September 17, 2014. On January 12, last year, the prosecution filed a review petition seeking death penalty for the Jamaat leader.
Meanwhile, on January 17, Sayedee filed a petition seeking review of the apex court verdict. He sought acquittal from all the charges in which he was found guilty.
According to the prosecution, Sayedee was involved in killing, looting, rape and forcefully converting Hindus to Muslims in Parerhat of Pirojpur district.
