UNB, Dhaka :
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday upheld the High Court order that granted six months interim bail to BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in five cases filed against him in connection with street violence.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice
Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order in a hearing on the government’s plea against the HC order granting interim bail to Rizvi in eight cases for street violence.
The apex court, however, stayed the interim bail granted to the BNP leader by the HC in one of those eight cases while fixed any day next week to give its judgment in connection with two other cases, Rizvi’s lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told reporters after the hearing on Thursday.
Earlier on July 7, the HC granted the bail to the BNP leader in eight cases filed against him. An HC bench comprising Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order after a hearing on the BNP leader’s bail petition.
Of the eight cases, three were filed with Paltan Police Station, while two with Jatrabari Police Station, and one each with Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Khilgaon police stations against Rizvi on charge of carrying out subversive activities, including vandalising and torching vehicles and hurling crude bombs.
