SC upholds Manna`s bail

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday upheld two High Court (HC) orders those granted bail to Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna in two cases filed on charge of sedition and provoking the armed forces to topple the government.
The apex court granted him bail until police submit charge-sheets to the lower court in the cases.
The Court also asked Manna to deposit his passport to the trial court during furnish bail bond at the lower court, Advocate Idrisur Rahman, a lawyer for Manna, told the reporters.
The four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after dismissing two petitions filed by the government seeking stay on the HC bail orders.
Adv Idrisur Rahman said, there is no legal bar of Manna’s release according to the apex court order.
On August 30 and November 10, the HC granted bail to Manna in the two cases filed on charge of sedition and provoking the armed forces to topple the government.
Manna was arrested on February 25 last year, a day after his telephone conversations with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka about strengthening the anti-government movement, among many issues, was leaked.
On February 24 last year, Gulshan police sued Manna bringing charges against him of instigating the armed forces and on March 5 of the same yera, Gulshan police lodged the sedition case against him.
In one conversation, Manna, the former organising secretary of the ruling Awami League, was heard talking to Khoka, and the other call was reportedly transited to an unknown person. During these conversations, the man asked Manna if he would like to sit with top army officers to talk about bringing a changeover in the country.
