Court Correspondent :
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld the High Court order that stayed the Government’s decision suspending the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
The HC’s order was upheld through a decision of the three-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Thursday. The apex court bench says that there is ‘no order’ in this regard, which keeps the HC order in force as earlier.
Senior lawyer Barrister Mainul Hosein appeared to the apex court on behalf of Ariful Haque Chowdhury, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented state.
Earlier on March 13, a bench of the HC comprising Justice Syed Mohammad Dastgir Husain and Justice Ataur Rahman Khan stayed the Government order that suspended the SCC mayor.
On January 7, 2015, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives suspended Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, as he was charged in a criminal case for his alleged involvement in the killing of former Finance Minister SMA Kibria. Ariful Haque filed the writ petition challenging the suspension order.
