SC upholds HC bail to ex-MP Rana

The Appellate Division on Monday upheld the bail granted by the High Court to former Awami League MP from Tangail-3 (Ghatail) Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in a case filed over killing of two Jubo League leaders.
A four-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order rejecting a petition filed by the state seeking stay on the bail order.
Talking to reporters Rana’s lawyer Monsurul Haq Chowdhury said now there is no bar to Rana’s release from jail following the court order.
Advocate Monsurul Haq Chowdhury stood for Rana while attorney general Mahbubey Alam and
deputy attorney general Md Bashir Ullah represented the state.
On July 1, the Appellate Division stayed till Monday (July 8) the bail granted by the High Court to Rana in the case and asked the state counsel to file a regular leave to appeal petition by July 8.
Earlier, on June 20, the Appellate Division stayed the High Court order that had granted permanent bail to former MP Rana in the case, till July 1.
The High Court on June 19 granted permanent bail to Rana in the case.
Baghil union Juba League leaders Mohammad Shamim and Mohammad Mamun went missing on July 16, 2012 in the district town.
The following day, Shamim’s mother filed a general diary with Tangail sadar police station.
Later, police arrested several suspects over the incident when two of the arrestees – Shahadat Hossain, 16 and Hiron Mia, 27 – revealed that both of the Juba League leaders had been murdered as the order of MP Rana.
