The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Bangladesh Bank’s decision to remove the Managing Director of NRB Commercial Bank, Dewan Mujibur Rahman.
The apex court said that its earlier stay order on the High Court order freezing the Bangladesh Bank’s decision to remove Dewan Mujibur Rahman from the post of Managing Director of NRB Commercial Bank will continue.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah passed the order, after disposing a petition filed by the Chairman of NRB Commercial Bank challenging the HC order.
NRB Commercial Bank’s lawyer Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury told the journalists that the apex court’s stay order on the HC directive regarding removal of Dewan Mujibur Rahman will continue following the SC order.
Following a writ petition filed by Rahman, the HC on December 7 last year stayed the BB decision to remove him from the post. The HC also issued a rule asking the BB and the government to explain as to why the central bank’s decision to remove Rahman should not be declared illegal.
Later on January 7, the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the High Court order that halted the Bangladesh Bank’s decision to remove Mujibur Rahman.
The Chamber Judge passed the order following a petition filed by NRBC Bank’s Chairman seeking a stay on the HC order.
The chamber judge also sent the petition of the NRBC Bank’s Chairman to the full bench of the Appellate Division for its hearing on January 11 in 2018.
The Bangladesh Bank on December 6 removed Dewan Mujibur Rahman from the bank for his alleged involvement in a number of loan scandals involving around Tk 700 crore.
