The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday stayed a High Court order that granted bail to Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna till November 27 in a case filed on charges of provoking the armed forces to topple the government.
The SC also directed the state to file a regular leave to appeal within this time.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order hearing on a petition filed by the government seeking a stay on the High Court verdict.
The High Court on November 11 granted bail to Manna in the case. The government then filed the petition with the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the High Court verdict.
The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station on February 24, 2015 bringing charges against him of instigating the armed forces.
Manna was arrested on February 25 last year, a day after his telephone conversation with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka about strengthening the anti-government movement, among many issues, was leaked.
On March 5 last year, Gulshan police sued Manna for sedition.
In one conversation, Manna, also former organising secretary of the ruling Awami League, was heard talking to Khoka and the other call was reportedly made to an unknown person. During this conversation, the man asked Manna if he would like to sit with top army officers to talk about bringing a changeover in the country.
Advocate Idrisur Rahman represented Manna in the court and Additional Attorney General Murad Raza stood for the state.
