The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed until next Sunday a High Court order that directed the authorities concerned to reopen the branches of Lakehead Grammar School in the city.
Three branches of the school were shut down on charges of patronising extremism and militancy.
The Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hussain passed the order upon three petitions filed by the government. The chamber judge sent the petitions to the full bench for hearing next Sunday.
The High Court yesterday ordered to reopen the branches of the Lakehead Grammar School within 24 hours.
The court also directed the school authorities to cooperate with the investigators if there is any sign of militancy and extremism against the institution in future.
The bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Hossain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan delivered the verdict after hearing three writ petitions filed by the school and several guardians.
Khaled Hassan Matin, one of the proprietors of the school and guardians of 12 students, filed three petitions challenging the legality of the government’s decision to seal the School.
The district administration of Dhaka on November 7 sealed three branches of Lakehead Grammar School.
On November 6 in 2017, Education Ministry directed Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka through a notification to stop all educational activities of Lakehead Grammar School including branches of Dhanmondi and Gulshan.
Lakehead Grammar School was established in 2006 at Dhanmondi. It has two branches in Gulshan.
