The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday stayed till June 20 the High Court’s bail orders for BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury in vandalism and arson cases. The apex court also asked the state to submit regular leave to appeal petition within the time.
A full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the orders following two separate petitions filed by the State, seeking stay on the HC orders.
Following two separate bail petitions filed by
Aslam Chowdhury, a joint secretary general of BNP, the HC on May 30 granted him ad-interim bail for six months in the cases filed over vandalism and arson with Shahbagh and Kotwali Police Stations in 2013.
Later the state filed appeal petition with the Appellate Division seeking stay on the High Court bail orders for Aslam Chowdhury. After hearing the petitions on Sunday the Appellate Division stayed the HC bail orders.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared in the court on behalf of Aslam Chowdhury, while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state.
On May 15, 2016 Aslam was picked up from the capital’s Khilkhet area over the alleged plot with Israel to topple Bangladesh government. After 11 days, he was sued on sedition charge on May 26, 2016.
Later he was shown arrested in some other cases including vandalism and arson with Shahbagh and Kotwali Police Stations in 2013.
