SC orders to return Mahmudur Rahman’s passport

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ordered to return the passport of Mahmudur Rahman, acting Editor of Bengali daily ‘Amar Desh’.
A four-member Bench of the Appellate Division of the SC Leaded by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing a review petition filed by the editor.
Mahmudur Rahman’s lawyers said that he was granted bail in a case on condition to hold passport. Later he (Mahmudur) filed a petition seeking review on the Appellate Division’s order.
Former Attorney General A J Mohammad Ali and Tanveer Ahmed Al Ameen represented the editor in the court while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the State.
Tanveer Ahmed Al Ameen said that concerned lower court is directed to return the passport within 24 hours of getting the copy of the order of the Appellate Division.
The lawyer also said that the editor need medical treatment in abroad. In this ground they sought review on the Appellate Division’s order.
Earlier, the Appellate Division ordered the Dhaka Medical College Authorities to form a medical board to check Mahmudur’s health condition. The medical board submitted a report in the court.
The Appellate Division passed the order considering the medical report. Now the editor can go to abroad for treatment, the lawyer said.
Mahmudur Rahman was arrested on April 11 in 2013 from ‘Amar Desh’ office. 77 cases were filed against him after arrest. He granted bail in all the cases. Recently he got released from jail.
