The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the authorities concerned not to produce prisoners and suspects in courts for trial proceedings amid growing coronavirus risks.
“The presence of prisoners and suspects in courts for trial proceedings is highly unsafe amid the risk of COVID-19,” the apex court said in a statement on its website. The decision came after Bangladesh confirmed three new cases of coronavirus, taking the total to 17.
“Legal proceedings of the cases will be held keeping the prisoners and suspects in jail. In case of other circumstances, the proceedings should be adjourned if necessary,” added the statement.
“The order will take effect immediately and it will remain in force until further notice,” the statement also read.
The government has already shut all forms of events and mass-gatherings to curb the spread of this infectious disease. All educational institutions, archaeological sites and museums, cinemas and cultural events have been closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
