Staff Reporter :
Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub, a Supreme Court lawyer, on Thursday offered unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for posting a derogatory status about Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and the judiciary on facebook on August 11 this year.
Mamun Mahbub appeared in the Appellate Division in the morning physically, and sought apology virtually before a full Bench of the SC headed by the Chief Justice during the hearing on a contempt of court rule issued by the court against him.
The SC lawyer told the apex court that he had mistakenly used a word while posting a status on his
facebook profile, which he deleted later. After hearing on the issue, the appellate division fixed August 23 to pass further order on the contempt of court rule.
Admitting that such comment on facebook was a serious crime, the lawyer also promised not do anything in future that would hurt the dignity of the judiciary.
Several lawyers including senior counsels M Amir-Ul Islam, Rokanuddin Mahmud, Zainul Abedin, AJ Mohammad Ali and AM Amin Uddin appeared for Syed Mamun Mahbub, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Additional Attorney General Murad Reza represented the state during the virtual proceedings.
On August 12, the apex court summoned advocate Mamun to appear before it on August 20 for posting the status.
The apex court also issued a rule asking Syed Mamun Mahbub to explain as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him for posting the status on his facebook profile.
