The Supreme Court on Wednesday commuted the death penalty of a member of banned Islamist outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to imprisonment unto death over a bomb attack on a judge in Sylhet in 2005.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the verdict after hearing an appeal filed by Akhtaruzzaman against a High Court verdict upholding his death penalty handed down by the trial court. Deputy Attorney
General Khandker Mohammad Diliruzzaman stood for the state during the hearing.
Diliruzzaman told reporters that the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of the convict considering his age as he was 19 years of age when he committed the crime.
