SC clears way for execution of Khalaf murder convict

The Supreme Court on Sunday dismissed a review petition filed challenging its earlier verdict that upheld the death penalty of Saiful Islam Mamun for killing Saudi Embassy official Khalaf Al Ali in 2012.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order.
Now, Saiful can seek Presidential clemency to save his life.
The SC on November 1, 2017 upheld the High Court verdict that gave capital punishment to Saiful Islam Mamun, life term to three others and acquitted one in the murder case.
The lifers are: Mohammad Al Amin, Rafiqul Islam Khokan and Akbar Ali Lalu. They are all behind bars.
Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali, 45, was shot dead in the city’s Gulshan area near his residence on March 06, 2012.
On December 30, 2012, a Dhaka court sentenced all the five accused to death.
On November 18, 2013, the High Court, in its judgment, acquitted one of the five condemned convicts, awarded life term to three others and upheld the death sentence awarded to Saiful Islam.
The Supreme Court on October 4 fixed October 7 for delivering order on a review petition against its judgement that upheld the death penalty of a convict in Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali murder case.
