The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday cleared the way for holding election to Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) scheduled for October 23.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Obaidul Hassan stayed the High Court order that halted the BFUJ election for two months.
Now there is no legal bar for holding the election on the scheduled date, said Additional Attorney General Sk Md Morshed who appeared in the court on behalf of
appeal petitioner Dip Azad, also a secretary general candidate in the election.
Following a writ petition the High Court on September 28 this year stayed the BFUJ election for two months.
Mohammad Hasan Ferdous, former General Secretary of Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ), filed the writ as his name was not included in the voters list of the BFUJ.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why Hasan’s name should not be included in the voter list.
On October 6, Dip Azad filed an appeal petition with the Appellate Division against the High Court order. After holding hearing on the petition, the Chamber Judge stayed the High Court order.
On September 25, BFUJ published the names of candidates for different posts. The BFUJ election commission has published a final list of 33 legal candidates out of 34 nominations filed for the vote.
According to BFUJ, about 4,000 members have been declared eligible to contest in the election. Senior Journalist Shahjahan Sardar has been picked up as the Chief Election Commissioner.
