SC clears DU VC panel polls

The Supreme Court on Wednesday cleared the way for holding a special senate meeting of Dhaka University on July 29 for electing a three-member panel for the appointment of the university’s vice-chancellor.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice Syed Mahmud Hussain stayed a High Court order that had put on the senate meeting.
With the order, there is no bar to holding the senate meeting, said AFM Mezbahuddin, a lawyer of Dhaka University.
The court also fixed July 30 for the next hearing of the petition filed by 15 registered graduates.
Earlier, on Monday, the High Court stayed the special senate meeting of Dhaka University convened for July 29. Following a writ petition filed by 15 registered graduates, an HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Faruque (M Faruque) had also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why the calling of the senate meeting should not be declared illegal and unlawful.
The education secretary, DU VC, pro-VCs and registrar had been asked to reply to the rule within four weeks.
At the same time, the court had ordered the constitution of the DU senate as per section 20 (1) of the Dhaka University Order 1973.
Court sources said the DU registrar issued a letter on July 16 which said the DU VC convened a special senate meeting at 4 pm on July 29 to form a three-member panel for the appointment of the VC by the university chancellor.
