UNB, Dhaka :
The Supreme Court on Tuesday overrode a High Court order that granted bail to former senior police official who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court in a bribery case filed in 2003.
Following an appeal filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), a five-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice M Muzzammel Hossain, asked Mostafa Kamal,
former Railway police super of Syedpur and former SP of Habiganj district to surrender before the lower court within two weeks.
Earlier, on January 22, the High Court granted bail to the former senior police official in the bribery case.
Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud stood for Mostofa Kamal while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC.
Sentencing to life imprisonment in the case, a Dhaka court on December 19 last year also fined Mostafa Kamal Tk 30 lakh, in default, to suffer one year more in prison.
The court, however, acquitted another accused, retired sub-inspector of Madhabpur Police Station M Wahed, of the charge.
As per the prosecution, Salauddin Ahmed, owner of SA Paribahan, was going to Sylhet by a car on December 22, 2002.
As he reached Madhabpur in Habiganj district, a team of joint forces intercepted Salauddin’s car and asked him to file a general diary (GD) with Madhabpur Police Station when he said he was carrying Tk 20 lakh with him.
Being informed about the filing of GD by officer-in-charge of the police station Ataur Rahman, Habiganj SP Mostafa Kamal ordered the OC to detain Salahuddin.
