Harunur Rashid, the prime accused of the seven-year-old Samia Afrin Sayma’s murder was arrested by a DB team from Dabarbhanga area of Cumilla on Saturday night, police said.
During interrogation, Harun described police about the gruesome murder of the girl, said Abdul Baten, Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at a press briefing in the media centre on Sunday afternoon.
Harun said that he took Sayma to the rooftop of the newly constructed building on a plea to show her the roof. Later, he violated her putting his hands on her mouth, leaving her unconscious, the police official said.
Assuming her dead, Harun tied the girl’s neck with rope and dragged her to kitchen, placed the body under the sink and fled the scene.
Harun used to live at the rented flat with his cousin Parvez at the same building where the victim’s body was found, Abdul Baten said.
He said, “Offense like murder commits when the criminal thinks that there is no way of survival after rape. That happened in this case.”
As per Harun’s confession, abdul Baten said the incident took place between 6:00pm to 6:30pm on Friday.
On the day, Sayma went to the 8th floor to play with flat owner Parvez’s minor daughter, taking permission of her mother. When she went there, Pavez’s wife told that her daughter was sleeping. While returning her flat, Sayma met Parvez’s cousin Harun in the elevator.
Harun took Sayma to the rooftop saying he would show her the roof. He violated her putting his hands on her mouth as she cried out.
Putting the body in the kitchen, Harun fled to his village Dabardanga under Titas Police Station in Cumilla, instead of going to Parvez’s flat. Police, arrested him from Cumilla on Saturday night.
Abdul Baten said Harun has been staying with his cousin Parvez for the last two months and working in a paint shop.
After the body was found, the victim’s father filed a case on Saturday morning accusing some unknown people.
“We will submit a charge-sheet in the court soon, seeking capital punishment for the accused,” he added.
Urging everyone to be careful, the police commissioner said the whole incident of the rape and murder of took place just in an hour.
Meanwhile, victim’s father Abdus Salam expressed his gratitude to the law enforcement agencies for swift detention of the suspect. He also demanded death sentence of the accused.
Conducting autopsy on the body of Sayma, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Dr Sohel Mahmud, head of Forensic Medicine Department, on Saturday said “The child was strangled after rape.”
“Several injury marks were found on her face and neck. The child was raped before the murder. We have found the evidence,” said Dr Sohel.
The body of Sayma, a nursery student of Silverdale Preparatory & Girls High School, was found with a rope around her neck, in an under-construction apartment where her family residences in Dhaka’s Wari area on Saturday.
