Authorities have put war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee on gardening duties at Dhaka Central Jail-1 located in Gazipur’s Kashimpur.
The Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir is serving an ‘imprisonment until death’ sentence given for his crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
Jailor Amzad Hossain Don said Sayedee was given the duty of gardening because he was physically weak.
He told bdnews24.com that the Jamaat leader was suffering from backaches and cardiac instability. Sayedee cannot walk by himself, he needs help, he said.
That’s why no pressure was put on him despite his inability to finish the tasks properly, the jailor said.
Ailing Sayedee usually passes time in his cell, he added. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Feb 28 last year found the Jamaat leader, known as ‘Deilya Razakar’ in 1971, guilty of two counts of war crimes and given the death penalty.
However, following Sayedee’s appeal against that verdict, the Appellate Division reduced the war crimes convict’s death sentence to ‘imprisonment until death’.
