Arecord partnership between Amy Satterthwaite and Amelia Kerr helped New Zealand to a consolation 2-1 victory in the final women’s ODI against England.
After opting to bat, England posted a 221-run target thanks to half-centuries from Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight, and it would have been more had it not been for Amelia’s brilliant 4/42.
However, Satterthwaite and Amelia then put on a New Zealand fourth-wicket record stand of 172* to help see through the chase in 46.4 overs, for a seven-wicket victory.
The result meant New Zealand avoided the sweep, and can look ahead to the upcoming three-match T20I series with confidence.
England lost their first wicket in as early as the second over, when Danni Wyatt became Jess Kerr’s first victim, caught behind for 1. Thereafter, however, the visitors frustrated New Zealand, with Beaumont and Knight putting on a 109-run stand for the second wicket.
Knight took the initiative during the partnership, scoring an 82-ball 60 to help take the total past the 100 mark, and it was only in the 26th over that New Zealand had their next wicket. It was Amelia who broke the partnership, trapping knight in front to trigger a slide.
None of the remaining batters made more than 15 as the New Zealand bowlers dismantled the line-up. From 115/1, England were bowled out for 220, with Beaumont holding up one end and ending unbeaten on 88*.
It seemed New Zealand would have a tough time with the bat after they lost openers Natalie Dodd and Hayley Jensen within the first seven overs with just 15 runs on board. When the crucial Sophie Devine was dismissed for 15 by Kate Cross, New Zealand were 51/3.
