The commercial cultivation of jujube, locally known as ‘kul’ or ‘boroi’, is increasing every year, and its export to Denmark and different middle east counties is expected to begin soon.
Different varieties of jujube are cultivated in the district. The popular varieties include Baukul, Apelkul, Narkelkul, Bilatikul, Ninety and Mistikul.
Farmers are interested to cultivate the fruit as it brings profit for them in a short time.
Additional deputy director at Satkhira Agricultural Expansion Department Amzad Hossain said, “There had been negotiations with exporters to export jujube to different countries this year. The export is expected to begin soon once the jujube becomes mature.”
Rafikul Islam, a farmer of South Sonabaria village of Kolaroa upazila, said he has been cultivating various varieties of jujube for the last 10 years. This year he cultivated Narkel and Apelkul on his three bighas of land.
“I hope to earn around Tk 4 lakh this year by selling jujube of three from bighas of land,” he said adding that he managed to make a profit of around Tk 3 lakh last year cultivating jujube on the same land.
Tahazzot Ali, another farmer of the village, said he has cultivated Misti and Ninetykul on his two bighas of land. “I’ve been selling jujube for the last 1 week and earned so far Tk 80,000 this season. I’m selling jujube at Tk 3,000 to 3,200 per maund. I hope to make a profit of Tk 2,80,000 to 3,00,000 as cultivated two varieties of jujube on two bighas of land if the weather is remains favorable,” he said.
Jujube is selling in different areas of the district town at Tk 100-150 per kg.
According to the Department of Agricultural Expansion (DAE), various types of jujube were cultivated on around 620 hectares of land in seven upazilas of the district.
DAE officials expect 70 to 80 maunds of jujube will be produced on each bigha of land this year.
