A central leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir who was allegedly involved in the recent violence unleashed by Jamaat-Shibirmen in Satkania upazila of Chittagong was arrested last night.
Enamul Haque Enam, 25, is the president of Satkania upazila unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. He is also the prime accused in Jubo League activist Abdul Jabbar killing case.
Acting on a tip off, Satkania police raided his residence in Bajaliya area of the upazila around 11:00pm yesterday and arrested him, the OC said.
The Shibir leader was involved in almost all the incidents of violence including vandalism and arson attacks on vehicles on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway that was carried out following the announcement of the verdicts in war crimes cases, said Khaled Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkania Police Station.
Several cases were lodged with the police station against him, he added.
On December 10, two days before the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah, Jamaat-Shibir activists went on rampage in different areas of the upazila led by Enam, he said. The Jamaat-Shibirmen stabbed Jubo League activist Jabbar indiscriminately and ransacked his house after news of Mollah’s execution spread on December 10.
Nine days after the attack, Jabbar succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in the port city. Yamin Sumon, an assistant sub-inspector of Satkania Police Station, filed a murder case on December 21 with the police station in this connection.
