Ahsanul Amin George, Khulna :Some local influential people have been allegedly lifting sands illegally beside the embankment of the river Chara in Dakop Upazila of Khulna district posing threat to the river erosion protection dam .When this correspondent visited the spot , he saw some persons are lifting sands at Bajua Union in Dakop Upazila in Khulna from the river Chara.Talking to the local people it is learnt that some influential persons have been conducting illegal sand business through sallow dredgers from the river and the embankment which may cause serious river erosion.On condition of anonymity, a local inhabitant told this correspondent that sand lifting has been going on by a section of influential people and as such the local administration could not protect them.While talking to the dredger owner Tanmoy Mollick of Kailashganj, he said that he has no permission for lifting sands, many people are lifting sands and as such I am also doing so.Mokhlesur Rahman of the same area also echoed with Tonmoy Mollick.Fazlur Rahman, a trader said, illegal sand lifting should be stopped at this very moment, otherwise river erosion might occur at any moment.Md. Abdullah, another businessman said, “We submitted several petitions to the district administration against the illegal sand lifters, but no step was taken due to mysterious reason.”Mrinal Kanti Dey, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Dakop said, “No person was permitted to lift sands , people who are engaged in the illegal sand lifting, stern action will be taken against them.”
