Illegal sand lifting along the Sonai River at Atua border point of the district has led to the erosion of farmlands in its vicinity.
An influential quarter has long been using dredger vessels to lift sand from Baralekha area.
During a recent visit, the UNB correspondent found a dredger machine lifting sand at Dhopa Dahar near a BGB camp at Nayagram in Beanibazar.
Locals alleged that two local political leaders have been dredging for the last four months illegally.
UP chairman of North Shahbazpur Selim Ahmed said the illegal dredging is causing erosion to farmlands.
Contacted, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Samir Biswas said legal actions will be taken against the illegal dredging.
