Inter were coming off a midweek Champions League exit and needed a win to keep pace with league leaders AC Milan. The home side had a more aggressive start and put their noses ahead in the 11th minute when Bremer poked in from close range. Controversy reigned in the 37th minute when Andrea Belotti went down in the box after a collision with Andrea Ranocchia, but the referee denied what seemed to be a clear penalty.
