Expelled Jubo League (JL) leader of Dhaka South Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat fell sick in the Dhaka Central Jail on Saturday night and was brought to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). The ex JL leader is now in the CCU 2 of the hospital.
Dhaka Central Jail official Bikash Raihan said, “As he (Samrat) fell sick, he was taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tazuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital, later, doctors suggested for him BSMMU.”
Samrat was supposed to be taken to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) office at Segunbagicha in Dhaka on Sunday.
On November 12, ACC filed a case against Samrat and his associate Enamul Haque Arman on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
ACC’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said, “accused Samrat and Enamul were involved in the illegal casino business and had illegally amassed wealth worth Tk 29.4 million and Tk 20.5 million, respectively.” The commission learnt that Samrat had amassed illegal wealth worth Tk 10 billion abroad.
Earlier on October 8, after complaining of chest pain at the Central Jail in Kashimpur, Samtar was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and was later shifted to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Agargaon. He was discharged from NICVD on October 12.
On October 6, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the ex-Dhaka South Jubo League President Samrat, and his accomplice Arman from the Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla, for their alleged involvement with illicit casino operations. RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam sentenced Samrat under the Wildlife (preservation and security) Act for six months in prison for keeping two kangaroo hides in his possession.
Following the arrest, RAB filed two cases against expelled Jubo League leader Samrat and his accomplice Arman with the Ramna police station. Samrat was sued under the narcotics and arms acts, while Arman was sued under the Narcotics Act only.
