The BNP on Friday gave support to independent candidate Salma Islam for Dhaka-1 constituency.
BNP chairperson’s media wing member Syrul Kabir Khan confirmed the report to The New Nation.
Salma Islam is contesting heavyweight Awami League candidate Salman F Rahman.
BNP has supported Salma Islam as it candidature Khondokar Abu Ashfaq had been cancelled by the Court.
Salman is a top businessman owning
Beximco Group, while Salma is the wife of another top businessman Nurul Islam Babul of Jamuna Group.
The rift between them began after ruling Awami League men attacked journalists of Jamuna TV and Jugantor, two media outlets owned by Jamuna Group.
Apart from Salma, BNP has also extended support to two other independent candidates Rezaul Karim Bablu for Bogura-7and Aleya Begum for Joypurhat-1, said Syrul Kabir Khan.
Following the decision, BNP leaders and activists have been instructed to work for the newly supported candidates.
