Forging social resistance against sale of date-expired and spurious drugs has become an urgent need for safe and sound public health, said discussants at a meeting here.
So, all conscious people should raise their voice against the malpractices.
Department of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) and local unit of Bangladesh Chemist and Druggist Samity (BCDS) jointly organized the awareness meeting at BCDS Bhaban yesterday.
President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Md Muniruzzaman and Assistant Director of Drug Administration Mirja Anwarul Based addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with local unit president of BCDS Ziaul Haque Bulu in the chair.
Assistant Director of DNCRP Apurba Adhikary, BCDS Executive Committee Member Dr Foisal Kabir Chowdhury and local unit General Secretary of Consumers Association of Bangladesh Golam Mostofa Mamun also spoke.
Various issues like monitoring and control the spurious, low standard, expired and banned medicines were discussed in the meeting.
Golam Mostofa Mamun revealed that many drug stores have no registered pharmacists and frequently sell medicines without any prescription. Many drug stores used fake pharmacist certificates or displayed token admission certificates to pharmacy courses.
Lack of training and knowledge can result in fatal complications for patients, who may buy medicines from any drug store without prescriptions.
Ziaul Haque Bulu said: “We are forced to stock illegal foreign medicines and contraband drugs as many doctors prescribe it for the sake of business. Otherwise, we can lose customers. Prescription of such medicines should be stopped first. Those who prescribe them go unchallenged whereas sellers like us face harassment”.
Chamber leader Muiruzzaman said BCDS members and other drug sellers should come forward and work together so that the sales of unauthorized drugs are stopped immediately.
