The government will start selling of rice at Tk 10 per kg to 50 lakh ultra-poor families across the country from today aimed at keeping the rice market stable.
“A family having five members can buy maximum 30 kilograms of rice in a month. A total of 2.5 crore people of the country will get the opportunity under the programme.” Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam told BSS.
People from lower income group can buy the rice during the five lean months – March, April, September, October and November under the social safety net scheme inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on September 7, 2016 under ‘The food-friendly programme’.
The minister said a total of 50 lakh cards have been distributed to the targeted beneficiaries by the people concerned including Upazila Executive Officer and public representatives.
