Staff Reporter :BNP Joint-Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed has been released from a Shillong hospital in India’s Meghalaya State. He is now in police custody, and is likely to be produced before the Meghalaya court today (Wednesday). Dr Vaskar Borgohain, Medical Superintendent of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) where Salahuddin was undergoing treatment under police escort, told media that Salahuddin was released on Tuesday afternoon.Earlier on Monday, Hasina Ahmed, wife of Salahuddin, reportedly appealed to the hospital authorities not to release her husband from the hospital and not to handover him to police before completion of his treatment. She told Dr Vaskar Borgohain that her husband has been suffering from different heart and kidney complications and his treatment might be hampered in the police custody.Meanwhile, Salahuddin’s family members claim that the BNP leader is not safe in Bangladesh. They want to take him to a third country for better treatment. “My husband is not safe in Bangladesh. We cannot take him back there right now. Instead, if the law here permits, we want to shift him as early as possible to Singapore where he had been earlier treated for his cardiac and kidney problems,” Hasina told The Indian Express. Hasina has told The Indian Express that she doesn’t know what happened to her husband after he went missing. But he is not safe in Bangladesh under the present government. “If I take him to Bangladesh now, I don’t know what will happen,” said Hasina. She also said that her husband is very sick. He has already three stents in his heart, while his left kidney is not functioning properly. He should be taken to third country for better treatment. She, however, said that her husband received good treatment in Shillong. But the Mt Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore knows his history and has been treating him for nearly 20 years.
