UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court will pass its order on April 15 on a rule it issued earlier asking the government to explain why
directions should not be given to find out BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed and produce him before the court.
An HC division bench comprising Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore fixed the date on Thursday after the final hearing on the rule.
Responding to a writ petition filed by Salahuddin’s wife Hasina Ahmed, the High Court on
March 12 issued the rule which had been returnable by March 15.
In her petition, Hasina Ahmed said the law enforcers picked Salahuddin up from a house at Uttara Sector-3 around 10:15pm on March 10.
In compliance with the HC order, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Special Branch submitted separate reports on March 15 stating that the BNP leader was not under their custody and they had been trying to trace him.
The court later adjourned the hearing until April 8.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Khandker Mahbub Hossain appeared for Salahuddin during the hearing on Thursday.
Moudud demanded formation of an independent investigation committee or commission to look into the matter, saying: “We believe Salahuddin Ahmed is still alive. Form an investigation committee to trace him.”
Apprehending that Rab might have been involved with the incident, Khandker Mahbub said RAB picked Salahuddin’s driver and PS up three days before the incident, tortured them and interrogated them. “Later, Salahuddin Ahmed was picked up. RAB might have been involved.”
On the other hand, additional attorney general Mamtajuddin Fakir appealed for rejecting the petition.
Salahuddin had been issuing statements, including those with hartal announcements, on behalf of the BNP-led 20-party alliance since the arrest of another BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on January 3.
