Sylhet Custodial Death: Saidul put on 3-day remand, SMP handed over Tk 50,000 to Rayhan’s mother

A Sylhet court on Sunday granted a three-day remand to police to introgate Md Saidul Sheikh, who accused death victim Raihan Ahmed of mugging.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) Khokan Chandra Sarker confirmed the reporters about the court directive in the case filed against Saidul on charge of forgery.
He said that Police Bureau of Investigation inspector Awlad Hossain produced Saidul before the metropolitan magistrate seeking 7 days remand to quiz him.
The metropolitan magistrate court-2 judge Saidur Rahman granted the remand at around 3:30pm after holding a hearing on the police petition,’ the SMP official said.
The PBI had arrested Saidul, 35, a resident of Khandaker Kandi at Moksedpur upazila in Gopalganj, on October 25 for his suspected involvement in torturing Raihan to death in police custodz. On November 2, Afzal Hossain Alal, a private car driver, filed a case alleging that Saidul embezzled Tk 1.2 lakh from him in the pretext of selling Saudi currency on October 13.
Later, the PBI took the charge of investigation in the forgery case filed against Saidul, who reportedly was a source of the Kotwali police. Raihan, 34, compounder of a doctor chamber, was reportedly tortured to death at the Bandar Bazar outpost of Kotwali police on October 11 as he failed to pay Tk 10,000 to some police officer as bribe.
The victims widow Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case of custodial death with the Kotwali police on October 12.
So far, the SMP suspended Five cops, including Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan who was in-charge of the police outpost and the prime suspect, and withdrew 3 others from the outpost.
Akbar had fled immediately after he was suspended on October 12 and was arrested from a frontier area in Sylhet on November 9.
Meanwhile, three constables, who were on duty at the Bandar Bazar outpost when Raihan was tortured, gave the witness testimonies to the court under section 164. Meanwhile, Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has handed over Tk 50,000 to the mother of Rayhan Ahmed, who was reportedly tortured and killed in at Bandar Bazar Police Outpost. Superintendent of Police Farid Uddin handed over the money from the district Police Welfare Fund on Sunday afternoon.
Rayhans mother expressed gratitude to the district police for arresting the prime accused, suspended Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan.
Superintendent Farid Uddin also assured Rayhan’s mother of justice for her lost son and gave gifts to Rayhan’s children. On October 11, Rayhan, 34, a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custodz, according to his family. His wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case with Kotwali police station the following day, accusing a number of unidentified people. In addition, the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) formed a committee to look into the death of Rayhan. After a primary investigation, it found some policemen guilty of foul play.
