Sagira murder charge hearing deferred

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday fixed September 21 to hear on framing charge against the four accused persons in the 30-year old Sagira Morshed murder case, as one of the accused was sick on Wednesday.
Judge KM Imrul Kayes of the court passed the order on Wednesday. Earlier, the court heard on the time petition, filed on behalf of one of the accused, and passed the order fixing the new date.
On January 14, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Inspector Md Rafiqul Islam submitted the 309-

page charge sheet of the case to the CMM Court while Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansary accepted the charge sheet and sent the case to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court for trial.
The four accused persons are Sagira Morshed’s brother-in-law Hasan Ali Chowdhury, his wife Sayedatul Mahmuda alias Shahin, brother-in-law (wife’s brother) Anas Mahmud alias Rezwan and their hired killer Maruf Reza. Meanwhile, the four accused give confessional statements narrating the incident under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
On July 25, 1989, victim Sagira, 34, was going to Viqarunnisa Noon School on the capital’s Bailey Road by a rickshaw to pick up her daughter Saharat. But, Sagira, could not pick up her daughter as muggers, according their previous plan, shot her to death in front of the school.
It has been learnt that there was dispute between the family of Sagira Morshed and Shahin. Besides, Sagira’s mother-in-law would like her more than Shahin. There were dispute between the two women about Sagira’s educational qualification.
Abdus Salam Chowdhury, husband of the victim, filed a murder case against some unknown persons with Ramna Model Police Station on the same day (July 25, 1989). However, the trial proceedings of the case had been stayed for the last 28 years due to a High Court order.
