Participants at a programme on International Migrants Day 2016 in Barisal on Sunday stressed for assurances for safety and security of the migrant workers through maintaining legal procedure with transparency and accountability.
District Administration, Office of Employment and Manpower jointly organised the programmes styled as ‘on highway of development, migrants would be given first preference’.
A discussion was held at Ashwini Kumar Hall after a procession from Circuit House in the city on this occasion. Representatives of administration, police, employment and manpower exchange office, non-government development agencies, stakeholders, mass communication participated in the programme.
They suggested speedy and harassment-free police verification report, issuance and renewal of passports, establishing and functioning of labour migration court to prevent fraud practice and special care for ensuring female-labour migration more safely.
The discussion was presided over by Ahsan Habib, additional deputy commissioner ( Rev), addressed among others by Nurul Amin, additional divisional commissioner, as chief gust, Saifullah Md. Nasim, Additional Deputy Commissioner (South), Barisal Metropolitan Police, Helaluddin, District Employment and Manpower Officer.
The speakers and participants said, migration is an expression of the human aspiration for dignity, safety and a better future. We should dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, sharing of experiences and design of actions to ensure their protection.
The migrant workers from Bangladesh enormously contributed to the growth and development in both of their host and home countries.
But sadly many of them have been subjected to exploitation, lack of social security, harassment, sexual abuse, and even human trafficking, they told.
Migrants usually materially poor, lack hope, take massive debts from corrupt recruitment agencies or traffickers and smugglers in the hope of getting to a safe place, for a new start, the stakeholders noticed.
Speakers emphasised the unconditional assistance of embassies and transparency and accountability in the works of recruiting agencies for safe migration of manpower and safe repatriation of the workers during crisis period.

There is no alternative to make all the process of migration and their working atmosphere safe for the sake of boosting remittance inflow for strengthening of the national economy.
The observation came in a post-rally discussion held in the conference hall of Technical Training Centre (TTC) here on Sunday.
