Safety of migrant workers stressed

Participants at a divisional workshop in Barisal on Wednesday stressed for assurances for safety and security of the migrant workers through maintaining legal procedure with transparency and accountability.
The stakeholders said migration is as old as humanity and we live in an era of unprecedented human mobility.
They suggested speedy and harassment-free police verification report, issuance and renewal of passports, establishing and functioning of labour migration court to prevent fraud practice and special care for ensuring female-labour migration more safely.
Development organization BRAC organised the day-long programme styled as ‘participation of stakeholders in safe labour migration workshop held at the conference room of the Barisal divisional commissioner.
Representatives of administration, police, employment and manpower exchange office, non-government development agencies, stakeholders, mass communication participated in the programme.
Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner Barisal presided over the programme.
Ripan Chandra Mandal, district Brac in charge delivered welcome address and Farhad Al Karim, Zakir Hossain, field coordinators of Brac migration conducted the programme programme.
Aminul Islam, senior manager Migration programme of Brac, presented keynotes on the topic and participants exchanged their views and suggestions in group discussions.
Among others Md. Gaus, divisional commissioner, Humayun Kabir, deputy inspector general of police, Nurul Alam, additional divisional commissioner, Mofazzel Hossain, Swapan Khan, Mamun Hossain, stakeholders, participated in the discussion. The participants said migration is an expression of the human aspiration for dignity, safety and a better future. We should dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, sharing of experiences and design of actions to ensure their protection.
