After the death of two innocent foreigners the government has taken the situation of law and order seriously. Killing of our own people day after day did not trouble the government that much. As security measures so much deployment of police, RAB and other law enforcing personnel has taken place that Dhaka looks like a besieged capital.In the recent past killing in Bangladesh is not an isolated tragedy. It is an everyday affair. For reason or no reason people are dying in the hands of others. Killing in police shootouts or in police custody has become a matter of no concern. They will say the government is showing zero tolerance for the criminals.The deaths due to reckless driving in the highways is no killing. Buses and trucks are to be feared as free killers.It has to be appreciated that the people are not interested in hearing from the government who are to be blamed for killing or whom they want the killers to be punished. Those who are alive want to be assured of their own safety and security.Finding out the killers and making them to face trial is the responsibility of the law enforcing agencies. But everybody’s life is his own and his anxiety is about his own life.Our view is that peace and stability cannot be achieved unless the people have participation in the government. The real peace in public life comes from fulfilling the conditions of good governance. But if any government can maintain peace without the requirements of the people’s participation and fair justice, well and good. Let them show it.It is undeniable that the government’s own men are creating the most of the crisis in maintaining law and order. The government’s lawmakers are making the worst problems for the government. We have law breakers chosen as lawmakers.We cannot help but to disagree that safety and security issues are wholly a police matter and can be handled by police alone. In our view politically organized good governance matters much more. In many countries political mismanagement is the cause of anarchy and insecurity in public life.Like the proof of a pudding is in eating the proof of an able leadership is the securing of peace and security.To say that the government is catching the offenders and punishing them is no consolation to the general public either when safety situation is deteriorating in the country. This cannot be called efficiency in securing law and order.The most immediate need of safety is the protection of the government from the incompetent ones.
