Speakers in a discussion here pointed out that ensuring rights to safe drinking water and sanitation is very vital for the vulnerable communities in the drought-prone region for freeing them from various air and water-borne diseases.
The issue of safe drinking water and sanitation isn’t any individual or personal problem but also the national problem. So, there’s no alternative to ensure transparency, accountability and good governance in the sector.
Safe drinking water supply and sanitation is the precondition to ensuring fundamental rights as it’s interlinked with all other rights like education, health and Medicare.
The observation came a participatory discussion styled “Knowledge Sharing on Salient Governance-related Issues” held at the training room of NGO Forum for Public Health in the city on Saturday.
NGO Forum Regional Office organized the discussion in association with ‘Enhancing Governance and Capacity of Service Providers and Civil Society in Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project’.
Main thrust of the programme was to find out effective strategies to cope with the existing and new challenges regarding water and sanitation in drought situation in the area.
District Facilitator of LGSP-2 Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal and Programme Facilitator of NGO Forum for Public Health Sabit Jahan Sisir conducted the technical sessions as resource persons with Rabiul Haque, Regional Manager of NGO Forum for Public Health, in the chair.
Union Parishad Chairmen Majaharul Islam and Kazi Ajaharul Anwar, Executive Director of Rajshahi Social Development Programme Selim Jahangir, Coordinator of National Development Programme Abdur Razzaque and Deputy Director of Arches Aminul Islam also spoke.
During his keynote presentation, Mostofa Kamal, said the changed climatic condition has been posing a serious threat to the overall public health especially related to water and sanitation in the vast Barind Tract comprising Rajshahi, Chapainawabgonj and Naogaon districts.
